What That Black Streaking or Growth Really Is
Those dark streaks are a living algae (Gloeocapsa magma) that feeds on the limestone filler in asphalt shingles. It spreads year after year, holds moisture against your roof, and makes even a newer home look tired. Moss and lichen dig in further and can lift shingle edges over time. The longer it grows, the harder it is to remove.
Technique Is Everything
Pressure washing is NOT the right way to clean a roof. High pressure strips the protective granules off your shingles and can shorten the life of your roof.
We’ve been cleaning roofs since 2002, and we use a soft wash. We apply cleaning solutions approved by the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA), following the roof manufacturers’ approved process. The solution kills the growth at the root instead of just knocking it back. Then we rinse with a low-pressure hose. No high pressure ever touches your shingles, and a soft wash usually stays clean much longer than pressure washing.
